If you ever need a few figures on some aspect of direct mail, this is the place to visit. Covering general and sector-specific aspects of mail, lists and database, many of the reports are getting on a bit but there's still useful information to be found.

Produced by marketing law specialists Osborne Clarke, this site provides in-depth coverage of legal issues in both below- and above-the-line marketing. Includes data protection and data ownership advice, paid and free legal seminar listings, upcoming changes in relevant UK law, and over 500 web pages of archived articles.

Internet marketing author and consultant Dave Chaffey's blog offers plenty of interest on all online marketing topics, from search to email and training. There are brief case studies, plenty of opinion and discussion and

UK branch of international network covering the 50+ demographic group. Coverage of events, suppliers and so on, plus superb archive of good quality articles covering the grey market.


DM Jobs

A new recruitment site specifically for the UK direct marketing industry, with a wide variety of roles on offer.


CMO

American CMO magazine goes well beyond the usual free online fare. The site covers a broad spread of marketing topics and requires registration but is strong on direct and new media, plus gives free access to high quality content from the likes of McKinsey and Gartner.


Marketing Terms

Though the site looks uninspiring, it holds a useful number of definitions of new media marketing terms ordered alphabetically and by a range of categories such as email marketing or search engine marketing.


Quirks.com

The website of US Magazine Quirks offers a huge range of searchable archive articles going back as far as 1986. Most of this is market research-related but database marketers will find much of interest on topics ranging from demographic analysis to neural networks.


Silicon.com

Though there is little marketing-related content, dotcom boom survivor silicon.com is one of best websites for generalist IT coverage and background - and it's all British. Find cheatsheets and how-to's for all aspects of IT plus a host of archived articles.


MS Office resources

There are many websites selling marketing templates for Excel but Microsoft's own site is a great place to start, with a host of free sales and marketing-relevant templates for Excel, Powerpoint and Word.


Data Warehousing Institute

TDWI’s site offers a worthwhile mix of quality reports, free research and vendor material, plus a comprehensive supplier directory in the Marketplace section. Includes a selection of email newsletters that you can sign up to for data warehousing-related news as well as a wide range of paid-for DW material.


Direct Magazine

DIRECT magazine – what’s hot in the American direct marketing industry. Events, gossip, news and technology make it the top DM publication in America.


MarketingProfs

A huge variety of articles - good and bad - on everything from email marketing and search engine optimisation to SWOT analysis and PR. Register and have a rummage.


Marketing Sherpa

The strangely-named Marketing Sherpa offers a variety of American archive articles and free e-newsletters on all sorts of subjects including b2b marketing. The case studies and email content are probably most relevant to
DM readers.


Catalogue Exchange

As the name suggests, The Catalogue Exchange provides a forum through which catalogue owners can swap customer lists. By registering on the site, list
owners can access guidelines on how to conduct swaps along with other catalogue businesses.

If you want to know more about some of the pressing issues that concern your IT director – or if you are an IT director – look on this Bloor Research site for both broad overviews and specialists outlooks on all things IT, CRM

An academic weblog worth a quick scan, with a number of worthwhile articles on privacy and other marketing topics. Also a variety of news items culled from both UK and US sources.

DMA USA

The American DMA website provides a selection of worthwhile PDF white papers on multichannel database marketing topics to non-members, who also have
restricted access to research and other US sector-specific research. An interesting window on DM stateside.


IT for Charities

An excellent resource for the not-for-profit sector, with lists of software and service providers plus other books, magazines and sites that offer useful information for all database marketers.


The IPA

As the industry body for above-the-line agencies, the IPA's site is most useful for its members. However, non-members have free access to reports, book reviews, various papers on subjects like econometrics, and can find details on the 80 per cent of UK agencies that make up the majority of the IPA's membership.


WARC

WARC's website is a superb resource for those serious about marketing, research and advertising. At £1550, access is expensive but some free content is available such as news, sample articles and email updates.


Federation of European Direct Marketing

Find out more about what's going on in direct marketing in Europe at the FEDMA site. Most of the content is somewhat indigestible but it holds a useful event calendar, codes of practice and details of current relevant European legislation.


Lenser

As a small site for specialist consultancy Lenser, this is mostly about promoting John Lenser's services but the seven articles on working with customer data in the catalogue industry are well worth reading.


KDNuggets

A data mining and knowledge discovery resource. Content includes news,features, white papers, extensive links to other sites, books, event listings, a good FAQ and a regular email newsletter.


CRM Guru

CRM Guru offers a wide selection of both paid-for and free content on the myriad topics surrounding CRM. Some jewels in amongst the vendor promotion in the free content and its discussion groups are well-attended.


InterForum ecommerce

A not-for-profit site promoting the use of ecommerce, InterForum offers strong case studies, white papers, a jargon glossary and a host of other resources related to online trade and marketing.


Advertising Standards Authority

Find out what not to do in advertising at the ASA site, with news on the most recent complaints and details of previous adjudications. Also holds the most recent version of the ASA Code of Practice for direct marketing, sales promotion and advertising so you can avoid legal trouble.


InsightExec CRM Zone

BT has taken over and revamped the old CRM Forum site, making it into the second in its group of InsightExec business resource sites. Holds a useful amount
of opinion, vendor-derived case studies and vendor white papers along with three different levels of low cost online advice on customer management.

The IDM’s site offers valuable information, even if you don’t want to become a paid-up member. Content of varying recency includes website reviews, trade press summaries, various email updates, the Magnet quarterly online magazine with news and comment and archived PDFs of the IDM’s former quarterly magazine, Directions.



Universal Postal Union

The UPU site offers useful background information on international formatting and addressing (in the form of downloadable PDFs), as well as keeping you up to date on the latest postal technology via its PTC site. A range of books and addressing data is also available to buy.



Royal Mail

The Royal Mail portal contains a full section on direct marketing in the UK (click on Mail Marketing link on the home page) including research, best practice information on putting together campaigns, discussion forums and online campaign management via the DM Online area.

Excellent source of news and features on the American DM scene. Includes a large amount of free searchable back issue content and the opportunity to subscribe to a number of email newsletters.



Geodemographics Knowledge Base

A handy site for users of demographic and mapping data for marketing as well as many other applications. Includes a comprehensive knowledgebase, links to many European data sources and updates on 2001 Census data.

Data mining pioneer Kurt Thearling’s website holds a wealth of papers, articles and discussion on the black art of data mining.
